What is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)?

Related to CBT in its focus on thoughts and behaviors, ACT offers an alternative, but complementary approach to therapy.  Learning how to be more mindful and accepting of all thoughts and experiences, while at the same time, committing to behavioral change in order to live a more meaningful and values-driven life is at the core.  Some of the strategies involved are values clarificationidentifying what really matters to you, as a touch-point to return to when pursuing change; thought defusion"—pulling away, or “de-fusing”, from unhelpful or interfering thoughts to weaken their impact; mindfulness—paying attention in the moment on purpose without judging it as good or bad; and acceptance—getting comfortable being uncomfortable, and accepting what’s not changeable.
